Description

Diana paints in a mode of “Magic realism”, a term invented to Describe the works of certain Latin American authors. It describes a capturing of the moment, the beauty of a place, building or vessel, or the telling energy of figures dancing, celebrating, resting, or moving through life. It is all visually poetic and worthy of depiction. She offers the viewer a chance to partake in these human images and to feel them. Recently, Diana has begun to work with images from the past as well. It is all relevant to her continuing journey of discovery fueled by her continuing travels around the world. An artist creates a definitive style which is immediately recognizable. Diana’s use of pastels as her medium of expression dictates this. However, it is informed by her background as a performer, choreographer, and teacher of dance. As she says: “ART is ART” What applies to the placement of figures on the stage applies to the placement of figures on a paper. The same dynamic energy finds its transmission.

Diana Rell Dean presents new works developed over the past 6 months. These works depict scenes from Mardi Gras in Mobile , Alabama, where MARDI GRAS originated, the beautiful, ancient buidings of Stockholm, scenes from the piney woods of TENSAW, ALABAMA, where her ancestors lived, and scenes travelling across the country on the train. Her medium is pastels. Diana is relatively new to the visual arts scene in Stuart, but she has been an artist all her life. Her extensive dance career began in 1976 and took place in Minneapolis and New York. Diana was a choreographer, performer and teacher of Modern Dance in the Wigman and Hawkins traditions. Three years ago, as an active member of the ARTISANS GUILD, she opened a new studio called RIVERHOUSE WORKSHOP, which she plans to develop as an arts venue of paintings and art objects.
